Your adrenal glands are two tiny glands that sit atop your kidneys and are part of your stress response system. When you are stressed, adrenaline and cortisol and blood sugar hormones are pumped out to combat that initial stress. See a tiger – run away fast! Your adrenals are geared to respond to acute stress beautifully. However, chronic stress over time exhausts your stress response system and can lead to what is known as “adrenal fatigue.” Your adrenal glands say “enough!” and retreat from overworking. This conservation of energy for survival reasons may lead to numerous symptoms as a result from chronic stress burning out the adrenal glands. Symptoms of adrenal fatigue may include central weight gain, poor sleep, feeling tired but wired, fatigue, exhaustion, low immune function, poor exercise stamina, increased cravings for fat, sugar, or salt; feeling overwhelmed or anxious, panic attacks, high or low blood pressure, irritability, loss of libido, sagging skin, poor muscle tone, caffeine dependence, worsening PMS or menopausal symptoms.
